RIM Unveils the PlayBook As Their First Entry Into the Tablet Space

On Monday, September 27th, RIM made an announcement that we had been expecting for some time. They unveiled their new tablet. We had speculated a couple months ago that this was coming and had thought we might see them name it the BlackPad. Fortunately, they went another direction, naming it the PlayBook.

I have to admit, I was surprised at what I saw with the device. RIM seems to have fallen a little behind the times of late with their hardware and lagging OS, but the PlayBook seems like a pretty nice leap ahead for them. The OS is not your typical BlackBerry operating system. This device will employ the BlackBerry Tablet OS designed and created by QNX which was recently acquired by RIM.

Dell Inspiron Duo Notebook and Tablet All in One

Dell showed off their latest and perhaps greatest new gadget at Intel’s Developer Forum 2010 in San Francisco. What started as a tablet presentation turned into a notebook show, but the same device was used in both cases.

How’d they manage that, you might ask. As Dell’s presenter was up on stage, he was showing off the capabilities of a new 10” tablet device. Near what appeared to be the end of presentation, he pulled a Steve Jobs maneuver with a sort of “one more thing” type of a transition. He picked up the tablet and transformed it into a full notebook right before our eyes.

Samsung Galaxy Tab is Creating Excitement

Last week, Samsung unveiled their newest baby, the Samsung Galaxy Tab.  It’s patterned after their Galaxy line of Mobile phone devices, but it’s a 7” touchscreen tablet with a TFT capacitive touch display rocking a 600 x 1024 resolution.  Their announcement came at the IFA conference in Berlin and the buzz has gone nonstop since that time.

There are now rumors that Samsung might be putting on a US press conference to introduce the device near the end of next week.  Not sure this is necessary, as we all know just about all we need to know about this device.  The bottom line is that I want one and this thing has the real chance of rivaling the iPad.  It actually brings to the table, some options that the iPad doesn’t yet.

Pioneer Computers of Australia Unveils “World’s First Dual Core Android ePad”

Apple’s iPad has been out since April of 2010 and the tech world has been waiting for its first real competitor.  We continue to hear about potential Android based tablets but have yet to see anything that can take a serious run at the market share Apple has already carved out for itself.

Well, we had to go looking Down Under, but we might just have found something worthwhile.  Pioneer Computers, headquartered in Australia, is getting ready to release what they are calling “The World’s First Dual Core Android ePad.”  The DreamBook ePad N7 is a dual core, Android based tablet with a 7” WVGA Capacitive touch display with an 800 x 480 resolution.  So what does all of that mean?  It means an Android tablet with a real touchscreen that allows multi-touch just like you’d hope to find on any good touchscreen device.

RIM Picks Up a Potential Tablet Domain Name. Seriously?

There’s been a lot of talk and speculation about a potential tablet launch from Research In Motion (RIM), the makers of the Blackberry.  It’s been hard to tell if this was just a rumor or if there was some legitimacy to the stories that have been circulating about a Blackberry companion tablet device.  I guess it makes a lot of sense when you consider that the tech world is pretty tablet focused right now.

Wednesday, there was some news that refreshed the RIM tablet rumors when it was discovered and quickly circulated that RIM has registered the domain www.blackpad.com.  When you visit the site, you get a blank white page without any content, but also without any redirect or errors.  Hmmm…..

Does the HP Slate Yet Live?

There may be some good news for tablet fans that are looking to see a little competition for the iPad.  It appears that HP has a tablet device listed, albeit obscurely, on their website under the name Slate 500.

A story ran today through IDG News about the HP page that is listing the device.  The Slate 500 is listed as a Windows 7 Premium device with an 8.9” screen.  It further suggests that it will have two cameras (a still camera and a video camera) and a pen input device.  The folks at IGN News go on to explain that the device is also listed as being Energy Star qualified on HP’s site and that the Energy Star Website discloses the that the device runs a 1.6GHz processor.
