The newest ComScore numbers arrived late last week and the results might be considered a little surprising. While everyone knows that Android is taking the mobile space by storm in recent months, I don’t know that anyone expected to see Apple lose market share around the release of their newest iPhone.
But, lose they did… ComScore shows Apple lost 1.3%, RIM dropped 1.8% and Microsoft dove 2.2%. Conversely, Android showed a 5% increase in total market share during the month of July. The final player, Palm, showed neither an increase or a decrease as they stayed exactly even.
So, the numbers look like this:
RIM – 39.3%
Apple – 23.8%
Google – 17%
Microsoft – 11.8%
Palm – 4.9%
Now, there are some things to consider. First, These numbers don’t take into account the full impact that Apple’s iPhone 4 had on the market. It was very early in the release cycle. Second, Microsoft is in a bit of a holding pattern as their highly anticipated Windows Phone 7 is scheduled to release this fall. Third, Palm lost nothing, but they didn’t gain anything either. This is very strange, especially considering that they have released nothing of late and nobody really knows what to expect from them since HP bought them up.
Google’s 5% increase is widely considered to be due to the fact that they have Android on so many phone models with every major carrier. This is in contrast to the iPhone that supports one or two phones at a time and is with only one carrier, AT&T.
Many believe that the August numbers, when returned, will show an increase in total market share for Apple due to the fact that it was out for a longer period by then. We’ll have to wait and see what Augusts’ numbers bring, but the numbers in July were definitely interesting, to say the least.
