Apple’s iPad has been out since April of 2010 and the tech world has been waiting for its first real competitor. We continue to hear about potential Android based tablets but have yet to see anything that can take a serious run at the market share Apple has already carved out for itself.
Well, we had to go looking Down Under, but we might just have found something worthwhile. Pioneer Computers, headquartered in Australia, is getting ready to release what they are calling “The World’s First Dual Core Android ePad.” The DreamBook ePad N7 is a dual core, Android based tablet with a 7” WVGA Capacitive touch display with an 800 x 480 resolution. So what does all of that mean? It means an Android tablet with a real touchscreen that allows multi-touch just like you’d hope to find on any good touchscreen device.
The N7 sports an Nvidia Tegra II chipset complete with a T20 1.2GHz Dual Core processor. It has 512MB of RAM and a 4GB Solid State Drive (SSD). It comes standard with built-in WiFi, a microSD port, a front facing 1.3 megapixel web cam, USB 2.0, a SIM card slot which we presume would be used with a national carrier to provide 3G support (specs list 3G as optional). It has a 3-Axis accelerometer and HDMI out. It is said to get up to 10 hours of battery life. All of this weighs in at 465 grams, or just about 1 pound. (see full specs provided by Pioneer Computers after the article)
Sound too good to be true? Well, from what Pioneer Computers told us, this Android device is for real and is currently scheduled for mass production in late September of this year. We are hoping to get an early release model so we can show our readers first hand exactly what they can expect to see when the DreamBook ePad N7 releases to the public.
Computex lists Pioneer Computers as Austrlia’s number 1 notebook, PC and server manufacturer since 1996. Pioneer has won awards for their technology and has been recognized by such publications as PC World, PC Authority and PC User, as well as Australian Personal Computers.
