Bluetooth headsets have been around for a while and they keep improving. The Plantronics Discovery 975 is an example of a well thought out and improved product. It has been around since last August, but it is still a top of the line piece of electronics and is one of the top Bluetooth headsets on the market.
Pros: Very light, comfortable fit, stylish design, great sound quality and noise cancellation, holds a charge
Cons: Difficult to use multifunction button, single volume button
Price range: $68 – $90 online
DViceNews has had an opportunity to get to know the Discovery 975 and understand its strengths and weaknesses. I want to lay those out for you to review. Hopefully this will help anyone that is trying to decide what type of Bluetooth headset they want to purchase.
Comfort
The Discovery 975 is extremely light weight, which is an important part of comfort. It does not have an ear loop so it had to be light enough that it could stay in the ear of the user without giving the feeling it was going to fall out. The gel tip that fits inside your ear is comfortable. It is easy to move the gel around the ear piece allowing you to move it into the most comfortable position possible. After the first use, I noticed slight soreness in my ear, but that was not noticeable after subsequent uses. Wearing the headset was an overall comfortable experience. If you leave the headset in your ear for an extended period of time, you might even forget it’s there.
Sound
Sound quality on the headset is excellent. In fact, it’s one of the top performers in sound that I’ve experienced. In live call testing, it was rare that the caller even noticed that a headset was being used. Noise cancelling brought to the device through Plantronics AudioIQ2 technology works great. When driving in the car and talking, I didn’t even have to turn the radio down very far for it to become unnoticeable to the caller on the line. I liked this because I noticed that I wasn’t messing with the radio volume when driving which means I was less distracted than I might have been otherwise, giving me better focus on the road and on my driving. I also noticed that wind noise was reduced too, but if you are standing in a serious wind, it’s going to be tough to hear. There’s still some work needed in the area of wind noise reduction, but Plantronics has made improvements which helps.
Design
The Discovery 975 is a very stylish piece of electronics. Many of you might remember seeing it on the hit TV show 24, on the Fox Network. It looks like a futuristic device with its long and slender microphone shaft and the diamond shaped multifunction button. The two buttons on the headset are the only areas in which I have concerns with the entire device. There is only a single volume button which means you have to cycle through the volume scale to go up and down, or you have to use your phone to control the volume quickly. The button is so small that it is almost flush with the headset. It is not always easy to find with your finger and depressing it isn’t always easy. The multifunction button is also easy to use. Pushing it takes a little effort and also moves the headset around in your ear. This can make your comfortable fit a little uncomfortable which might require an adjustment. Both buttons work and once you get used to them they are fine, but with such an advanced headset I would have expected them to be more user friendly.
Extras
The headset comes with a charging case that can store a charge and provide the headset with two full charges before the case itself needs to be recharged. The case has an LCD screen in it that shows the battery charge remaining on the case itself as well as the headset. It also has a Bluetooth indicator that lets you know when the headset is on and paired. The Discovery 975 allows you to pair it with two devices at once. It also has voice prompts to let you know when you lose your Bluetooth connection, when your call is muted, and when battery is running low.
The Bottom Line
The Plantronics Discovery 975 is a very advanced Bluetooth headset with a great look and comfortable fit. We recommend that you seriously consider it if you are in the market for a new Bluetooth headset.
