Twitter Roles Out Tests on a “You Both Follow” Feature

Image provided by androinica.com

On June 2, 2010, Twitter announced they were testing out a new “You Both Follow” feature similar to what you might see with Facebook’s “friends in common” feature.   They announced this in the form of a tweet from Nike Kallen, Twitter Engineer.  The significance of this move is that it makes Twitter a little more social and gives each member the ability to easily connect with people the people with whom you have common connections.   At this time, the feature is only rolled out to 10% of Twitter users with no clear indication when it will be available for everyone.

Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, Apologizes Promises Simpler Privacy Options

Image provided by scrapetv.com

On Monday, Facebook Chief Mark Zuckerberg wrote a column in the Washington Post admitting that Facebook screwed up the latest iteration of their privacy offering and promised to provide an easier way to maintain control over their information.  He went into very little detail in the article except to say that they have been listening and now realize that they missed the mark by attempting to offer so many controls.  He indicated that he believes the number of privacy options that have been offered has created confusion and that in the coming weeks it will be fixed.

Ford, in partnership with the University of Michigan have geeked out two 2011 Ford Fiesta’s and are putting them on the road to go cross country and engage us via various forms of social media all along the way.

Several Michigan University students worked on an app for their car while Ford worked to equip the other new Fiesta with custom apps that would allow the car to tweet its statuses and to do automatic Check-Ins via foursquare, a global positioning social media application, so you can tell where they are and where they’ve been.  The cars are even connected back to a website that has a real-time gas mileage indicator so that we can see how they’re doing on fuel consumption.

Kindle Upgrade to Include Facebook and Twitter Access

Amazon has announced that it will be releasing Kindle software version 2.5 to a limited test group soon and then to all users by the end of May of this year.

There are a number of updates of interest, but the biggest addition is the ability to access facebook and Twitter.  This social networking access will give Kindle owners the ability to share excerpts from the material they are reading with their friends.

Other updates include the ability to organize books into collections, the ability to see what other Kindle users think are interesting or important in the books you are reading, panning and zooming on PDF documents and fonts are being sharpened up to making reading easier and more comfortable.

App Review – Tweetie 2

There has been some talk lately about the trouble that third party Twitter developers might be in on the iPhone platform due to the fact that Twitter has purchased an existing app to update and revise as the official Twitter app for iPhone.  The app that Twitter has purchased is currently called Tweetie 2 by developer atebits.  I believe this is one of the most useful Twitter apps available today for iPhone.

Will You Change the Way You Tweet Now That it Will Be Archived?

If you knew that everything you ever tweeted was going to be saved forever and would give future generations a glimpse into what our society was like in the early days of social networking, would it change what you tweeted?

The Library of Congress has announced that it will be archiving all public tweets that have been posted since Twitter emerged in 2006.  The Library of Congress is the largest library in the world, archiving millions of books, pamphlets, music, manuscripts, and maps that are registered  within the United States.  Now, with the decision to archive all tweets, it is making a big move into the acquisition of digital records.
