Ahhhh, the web is alive with the sound of Froyo. At least it is if you’re a Droid X owner. The long awaited updated is almost here and we’ve received confirmation that tomorrow, Wednesday the 22nd, is the big day.

If you still don’t believe us, and quite frankly we can’t say we blame you for as long as it’s taken, just do a search on the internets and you’ll see post after post after post detailing Verizon’s acknowledgement that Droid X is getting Froyo starting tomorrow.

We don’t have a lot of details yet. Often times, the OTA (over the air ) update is sent out in the early morning hours. So, it’s possible that we’ll see the update start rolling out sometime after midnight this evening. If not, it will likely happen throughout the day tomorrow.

To get this update, you really have two options. First, you can simply wait until the update is pushed over the air to your phone. Your DX will download, install and notify you when it’s done. Alternatively, if you are anything like we are, which is to say extremely impatient, you can click the menu button, tap settings, scroll all the way down and tap about phone, then tap system updates. The download will begin and then the install will happen from there.

The big enhancements as notated by Verizon are Flash 10.1 for Android, easy switching between most recent apps, better JavaScript loading, 270 degree screen rotation, auto updates for apps, VZNavigator, improved Google Maps performance, improved exchange syncing, easy to edit MMS with video files, easy to manage message history from contacts, transitioning between Wi-Fi and 3G without losing connection and an improved 3G Mobile Hotspot app.

That’s a lot of good stuff to look forward to, so upgrade as soon as you can and enjoy yourselves. Please let us know what you think after your get your Froyo. Leave us your comments because we love to hear from you.

UPDATE: Wednesday 9/22/10

The Froyo for Droid X rollout did indeed start today, but it turns out that it is a phased release.  While this is typical for Verizon as a way of maintaing their network strength, it appeared they might have been going with a full rollout on this upgrade.  Unfortunately, some of us will just have to wait for a day or two to receive our Froyo.

I made several calls to Verizon tech support to find out what they knew about the upgrade and received a different answer on each call.  The answers ranged from “you’ll receive the upgrade at noon Eastern time” to “it’s a staggered release from East Coast to West Coast” to “you need to shut down your phone and take the battery out, then restart your phone and you should be able to upgrade.”  That’s kind of what I expected, but was hoping one of the answers would be “sorry about that, let me push that upgrade out to you myself.”  No such luck!

UPDATE: Saturday 9/25/10

After several days of frustration because I didn’t have my Froyo yet, and a week or so of messages telling me that Updates were not working on my phone, I did a factory reset.  After I set my phone back up and it started up as it should, my Froyo updated started downloading and was installed and full functional within 45 minutes.  Why didn’t I do that in the first place?  Oh well, I’ve got Froyo now, and it definitely sped up my phone a bit.  I’m happy with the increase in scrolling speeds, internet access, and loading of apps.  I also really like the Chrome to Phone functionality as well as the Google Voice Actions in conjunction with Voice Search.  Excellent upgrades and definitely worth getting your hands on.
